E-Way Bill › E-way bill validity and Part B
E-way bill validity and Part B (vehicle)
An e-way bill has two parts. Part A describes the goods and the parties; Part B gives the vehicle or the transport document. The clock starts only when Part B is filled in for the first time.
How long it is valid
- 1 day for every 200 km or part of it. For over-dimensional cargo (ODC) it is 1 day per 20 km.
- A "day" ends at midnight. An e-way bill made at 10 pm for 150 km is valid till midnight of the next day.
- Made with Part A only, it has no validity until Part B is added; the validity is counted from that update.
| Distance | Regular vehicle | Over-dimensional cargo |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 200 km | 1 day | 10 days |
| 201 to 400 km | 2 days | 20 days |
| 801 km | 5 days | 41 days |
Part B later, in bulk
Often the invoice is ready before the truck is. Make the e-way bills without a vehicle (Part A only), then, in step 4 of the Excel section on the home page, list the e-way bill numbers with their vehicles and press Download vehicle update file. Upload it on ewaybillgst.gov.in › e-Waybill › Update Vehicle Bulk. The same file serves when goods move to another vehicle (choose the reason: break down, transhipment or others).
- By road, give the vehicle number (or, at generation, the transporter's ID so the transporter adds the vehicle).
- By rail or air, give the transport document number and date (RR, airway bill).
- By ship, the vehicle number or the transport document.
- Part B can be updated only while the e-way bill is active and, once it has validity, before it expires.
Extending it
If the goods can't reach in time (breakdown, accident, transhipment), the e-way bill can be extended within 8 hours before or after it expires, by the person in charge of the transport. Since 1 January 2025 the total life of an e-way bill, with all extensions, is capped at 360 days from its first generation.
Cancelling and rejecting
- The maker can cancel it within 24 hours, if it hasn't been verified on the road.
- The other party can reject it within 72 hours, or before delivery if earlier.
- Since 1 January 2025 the portal does not make an e-way bill for an invoice or challan more than 180 days old.
